AKUAPIM SOUTH MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY  coat of arms

ASMA Health Directorate Initiates steps to Save Women Lifes through Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical Cancer Screening Between January and July 2024, a significant cervical cancer and STI screening event were held within the Municipality thanks to the collaboration between the Akwapim South Health Directorate, and the UMASS Public Health Student Team. This vital initiative aimed to promote women’s health by offering comprehensive screening services, particularly for cervical cancer, a leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women. The three screening sessions also included testing for several sexually transmitted infections, with a total of 242 screened. The screening identified cases of various conditions, such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, hepatitis B, and suspected cervical abnormalities.

In addition to the screenings, the UMASS Public Health Student Team generously donated two thermo-coagulators, significantly bolstering the Municipal’s capacity to treat cervical abnormalities. This contribution is a crucial step forward in improving healthcare services for women in the municipality.

The screening event marked a milestone in the ongoing efforts to combat cervical cancer and STIs within the district. Early detection and appropriate management of the identified conditions have already begun, with treatments provided and referrals made to Hospital for further care. Continued collaboration, awareness-raising, and resource enhancement remain essential to sustaining the fight against these critical health issues.

The successes of this program were largely due to the unwavering support of our sponsors, the UMASS Public Health Team. Their commitment to enhancing healthcare accessibility and raising awareness is truly commendable. We also extend our deepest gratitude to the esteemed team leaders, Dr. Leslie Bizovi, Dr. Ronald Leombruno, Eva Perri, and Marie Meckel, whose expertise and guidance were instrumental in the program’s coordination. Special appreciation goes to the local teams led by Ms. Rebecca Bantey of Asuogyaman and Ms. Emily Amponsah of Akwapim South, whose tireless efforts ensured smooth logistics and community outreach.
