Social Welfare & Community Dev't Sensitizing Public Schools on Cyber Security

2024 cyber security sensitization On the 22nd May, 2024 the Dept undertook sensitization in 8 public schools on cyber security to enhance the use of Internet and the necessary guidelines to follow, and to avoid hacking and bullying online.

The schools are Aburi Anglican, Ahwerease MA JHS, Gyankama Methodist, Konkonuru Methodist, Nsaba JHS, Dumping JHS, Obodan JHS, Ahyiresu JHS.

Children are exposed to technology at an earlier age, and because of this, they are more vulnerable to cyber threats. Including cybersecurity in primary school curricula is crucial for providing protection and fostering a safe online environment for children.

Incorporating cybersecurity education into a child’s learning process has several advantages. Firstly, it empowers them to protect themselves from online dangers such as cyberbullying, phishing, and other malicious activities. They acquire knowledge and skills that enable them to make informed decisions and navigate the digital world securely.

Furthermore, introducing these concepts at an early age helps children develop an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. These skills can pave the way for successful careers in cybersecurity, coding, and technology. Engaging activities like Cyber Quests serve as interactive platforms for kids to challenge themselves and demonstrate their knowledge in various cybersecurity realms.

Another essential topic discused is bullying and cyberbullying. It is vital to educate kids about respectful and responsible online behavior, as well as the lasting consequences of online harassment. Encourage open communication about instances of bullying and discuss strategies for coping with and reporting such problems.

A discussion on identity theft is needed for a comprehensive understanding of cybersecurity. The children were made aware of the potential dangers of sharing their personal information and the steps to take if they suspect their information has been compromised.

Interactive Teaching Methods
Educating kids about cybersecurity can be both fun and engaging with the right interactive teaching methods. Incorporating games, videos, and classroom activities can effectively help children grasp basic concepts.

Incorporating videos into the learning process is very beneficial. In the absence of that, flash cards were used to provide visual examples of important principles, making the content more engaging and easier to understand.

Empowering children with strong foundational skills such as math, problem-solving, and critical thinking is essential for pursuing cybersecurity careers. These skills will enable them to analyse complex situations and come up with effective solutions to potential security threats.

Takeaway
By nurturing cybersecurity awareness among children, they can become responsible digital citizens, equipped with the expertise needed to protect themselves and contribute to a safer online environment. Early exposure paves the way for the next generation of leaders to manage increasing cyber threats effectively.

Ultimately, early exposure to cybersecurity concepts and opportunities encourages students to consider a future in this domain. Implementing interactive and engaging methods for teaching cyber security to kids lays the groundwork for a generation of informed, passionate, and competent professionals well-equipped to safeguard the digital landscape.

In all, officers of the Social Welfare and Community Development engaged about 250 students across the various schools visited in the municipality and was educative and very interactive.
