The 40th farmers day was held on the 8th of November, 2024 at Obodan in the Akuapim South Municipality. The event was attended by chiefs, the Member of Parliament Hon O.B Amoah, Municipal Coordinating Director Madam Lydia Akueteh, Heads of Departments and Units, security agencies, assembly members and some townsfolks. Also in attendance were the farmers who to be awarded with their families.
In a speech read on behalf of the Municipal Agriculture Director, Madam Perpetual Decker, by an agriculture extension officer, Mr Eric Azu, under the theme, "Building Climate Resilient Agriculture for Sustainable Food Security", he said, due to climate change, food and crops have been affected adversely, he therefore advised farmers to liaise with the Agric Department to embrace new technologies to maintain and improve crops resistant to the unfavorable weather conditions affecting crops and storage.
He also said best farmer will be awarded based on them meeting the requirements of the agriculture department. Further, he advised farmers to come together and form groups so they meet the extension officers for education in dealing with the climate change. He however advocated for more staff to enable the department to empower more farmers in feeding the nation.
In another speech read on behalf of the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Frank Aidoo, by the Municipal Coordinating Director, Madam Lydia Akueteh, he thanked the farmers for their effort in providing food to feed Ghanaians. He also talked about the reasons why the date of the 40th farmers day celebration changed from 5th December, 2024 to 8th November, 2024. This was because, the date for the farmers day was too close to the general elections.
He also said that due to climate change, farmers ought to adopt new methods in growing crops and be food security conscious. He again advised them to contact Agric department to seek advise on how to grow drought resistant crops amidst climate change to secure our food to prevent hunger, amongst others. He added that farmers should adopt good agriculture practices to till the land.
He touted some interventions by government, like the planting for food and jobs, planting for export and rural development, which has uplifted the image of Agric and admonished them to register to enjoy more intervention to alleviate poverty. He ended the speech by wishing them well and congratulating the award winners.
The member of Parliament for Akuapim South Municipal Assembly, Honorable O. B Amoah, in his address congratulated the farmers, adding that most farmers are not well informed and educated about interventions and programs designed to meet their needs. He therefore admonished the assembly and all stakeholders to ensure the farmers are well vested with their benefits because government is capable of providing the needs of the farmers. He also donated an amount of GHC 1,000.00 each to all the 12 farmers who won an award to ease their work.
A person with disability was among the awardees, he received a 32-inch television, bags of fertilizers, polytank, cutlass and a cash prize of GHC 1,000.00. The overall best farmer was awarded to Mr Kwasi Aproko from Kwamekrom. Among the items he received were a tricycle, bags of fertilizers, polytank and a certificate.
