The launch and symbolic planting in the celebration of the National Green Ghana Day was held at Kitase L/A Methodist Primary & Junior High School at Kitase, a town in the Akuapim South Municipality. The theme for this years exercise was “Growing for a greener tomorrow”.
In attendance were the Ms. Lydia Akueteh (Mun. Coord. Director), Nana Kwame Boadu I (Kitase Apagyahene), Dabrehene Tweneboah Kodua I, Ankobeahemaa Akosua Asiedua I, Hon. Frank Amankwah (Kitase Assemblyman), Mrs. Gloria Asare (Asst. Manager, Forest Services Division-Somanya), Immigration Officers, officers of the various departments of the Assembly, students among the participants.
This year as part of the National Green Ghana exercise, three thousand and eighty (3,080) tree plants of three (3) different species were supplied by the Somanya Division of the Forestry Commission and planted in Akuapim South Municipality on the 14th of June, 2024.
Ms. Lydia Akueteh admonished all present to take planting tress serious as humans and animals also depend on them for survival. She again advised that we help we inculcate the habit of protecting the environment, by planting these trees and nurture them in their growth process.
The MCD also challenged all to actively get involved in this exercise so that next year, the district will be mentioned as the leader in the planting exercise and to restore the once enviable cool weather.
Mrs. Gloria Asare said the national programme was under the auspices of the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Forestry Commission. She said it was an initiative to intensify national afforestation and reforestation to bring back the lost forest cover and also go a long way to contribute to the global determination to lessen climate change and its negative effects on humanity. She encouraged individuals, institutions, faith-based organizations and the community at large, to get involved in the planting exercise by picking a seedling or seedlings and planting them in their farms, along watershed areas, at road medians, compounds of homes, churches, offices, recreational grounds and parks etc.
The organization and planting was spearheaded by the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) headed by Mr. Buckman. He made it known that apart from the venue of the launch, some of the seedlings were planted at the Kitase refuse damp, Peduase Methodist School, the Akuapim Vocational Training Institute (AKVTI) among other places.
The dignitaries present, planted some of the tress on the compound of the school to signify the symbolic launch of the planting exercise.
