The Akuapim South Municipal Assembly held its maiden inter-schools debate on 6th March 2026 at the PWCE Auditorium in Aburi, marking Ghana’s 69th Independence Anniversary.
Replacing the traditional march past, the debate focused on “Artificial Intelligence: A Blessing or Burden to Ghana’s Education System” under the national theme “Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope.”
Three schools participated: Aburi Girls Senior High School (ABUGISS), Adonteng Senior High School (ADONSCO) and Aburi Presbyterian Secondary Technical School.
The event drew dignitaries and the public, including the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Municipal Education Director (MED), Presiding Member, school heads, Assembly members, traditional leaders, clergy, students, Assembly staff, and the media.
In his opening remarks, the MCE emphasized that Independence Day should inspire action to strengthen education and encouraged students to present thoughtful arguments.
The Municipal Education Director, Madam Elizabeth Afriyie, praised the initiative and called for similar programs in the future, while the Presiding Member, Michael Ahwireng announced a donation of GHS 3,000 to each school.
During the debate, Aburi Girls SHS and Aburi Presbyterian Secondary Technical School opposed the motion, citing potential negative effects of AI, while Adonteng SHS supported it, highlighting benefits such as improved access to global resources and enhanced teaching efficiency.
The final scores were: Aburi Girls SHS – 607 points (1st place), Aburi Presbyterian Secondary Technical School – 476 points (2nd place), and Adonteng SHS – 459.5 points (3rd place).
In closing, the MCE commended participants and stressed the importance of intellectual engagement in Independence Day celebrations. He also announced plans to commission four new educational complexes and the allocation of GHS 320,000 for two JHS municipal mock examinations, reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to education.
The maiden debate was widely regarded as a success, fostering critical thinking among students and promoting discussions on the role of AI in Ghana’s education system.
