2026_ahyiresu farmer sensitization The Cooperative Unit paid a working visit to Yeboakrom–Ahyiresu within the Akuapim South Municipality Assembly on 26th February 2026 to sensitize farmers’ group on the procedures and requirements for registering under the cooperative framework in order to access associated benefits.

In a brief address, the Financial Secretary, Mr. Charles Ayesu-Kwafo, disclosed that farmers engaged in rice, vegetables, cassava, and maize cultivation had formed an unregistered cooperative a few months ago. The association currently has a membership of 30 and has indicated its intention to regularize and formalize its legal status.

The Municipal Cooperative Director, Madam Dorcas Kwakye, commended the group for initiating the cooperative and for seeking to legalize it. She explained that to operate under the cooperative umbrella, the group must comply with established guidelines, including the provision of shared capital, payment of an entrance fee, and submission of valid bank account details, among other requirements. Adding that prompt submission of these documents would facilitate swift certification.

Further she opined that proper documentation would enable the group to access technical advisory services, government support initiatives, extension services, NGO assistance, and skills training programs, particularly for women.

Additionally, she noted that mobilized share capital could be invested in viable ventures, support access to bank loans and grants, and attract international development assistance. Madam Kwakye encouraged members to remain committed to the legalization process, emphasizing that sustained growth could position the cooperative to establish profitable ventures, such as a credit union, for the benefit of the farmers and the broader community.

The farmers took turns expressing concerns relating to financial management, leadership structure, and membership issues, all of which were addressed by the director and relevant stakeholders.

The meeting helped bridge the gap between the farmers and government interventions, with the objective of improving livelihoods and reducing overreliance on state support.
