As part of the government's Renewed Hope Agenda to expand reliable electricity access and close the electrification gap in remote and underserved communities across Ghana, a high-level delegation from the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) visited the Akuapim South Municipal Assembly (ASMA) on 21st January 2026.
The delegation formally introduced GRIDCo’s ambitious plan to construct a major new transmission line starting from the Greater Accra Region and extending through parts of the Eastern Region. The proposed line will cover approximately 215.7 kilometres with a right-of-way corridor 40 metres wide. Akuapim South Municipality is one of the seven municipalities in the Eastern Region that will be directly affected by the project route.
This critical infrastructure project is designed to strengthen Ghana’s national transmission network, enhance grid stability, and lay the foundation for sustained economic progress. The initiative will significantly improve power reliability by reducing frequent outages, minimise transmission losses that currently affect efficient power delivery, and create a more dependable electricity supply to support households, businesses, industries, agriculture, small-scale manufacturing, and broader community development.
During the visit, GRIDCo officials held detailed discussions with municipal authorities, traditional leaders, and other key stakeholders. The conversations covered the project’s scope, expected timeline, environmental and social safeguards, compensation arrangements for affected landowners, and measures to address community concerns. Emphasis was placed on transparency, active community participation, and ensuring that local benefits are maximised.
The Akuapim South Municipal Assembly warmly received the proposal, recognising its potential to drive socio-economic transformation in the municipality and contribute to the national goal of universal electricity access and a more resilient power grid.
This engagement represents a key step in the project’s preparatory stage. It sets the stage for further stakeholder consultations, detailed route surveys, land valuation processes, and eventual construction, as GRIDCo continues to advance this vital addition to Ghana’s energy infrastructure.
