A monitoring team from the Akuapim South Municipal Assembly, lead by Miss. Francisca Amoah (Desk Officer), her assistant Beatrice Agbossou and Mr. Maxwell Bonsah (Municipal Nutrition Officer), visited selected schools within the municipality. The schools monitored included Obosono, Ankwasu, Oboadaka, Kwame Ntow and Aburi Amanfro Basic Schools.
Meals served were generally well prepared, warm and adequate in portion size. Pupils expressed satisfaction with the meals, although improvement in menu variety and protein content was recommended.
In terms of hygiene, most caterers were neatly dressed. However, the consistent use of aprons, hair nets and proper handwashing practices needs to be strengthened.
Kitchens conditions were generally clean and organized. Nonetheless, improvement in ventilation and proper waste disposal were recommended in some cases. Pupils indicated that the programme positively supports their school attendance.
Recommendations
Caterer were advised to strictly adhere to hygiene standards by consistently wearing aprons, hair nets and regular handswashing. Also, efforts should be made to improve menu variety and increase protein and vegetable content to enhance the nutritional valve of meals. Again, kitchens should be cleaned regularly with proper waste disposal maintained at all times, and ventilation improved where necessary.
The School Feeding Programme in the visited schools in the Akuapim South Municipality is progressing well, with only minor improvements needed in hygiene practices and menu variety. Continuous monitoring will be carried out to ensure standards are maintained.
