On the 27th July 2020, the Department of Agriculture in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service held a community sensitization meeting on promotion of home gardens to help reduce malnutrition in women and the Vulnerable Populations through Food-Based Approaches .
The project seeks to address the challenges that hinder the consumption of nutrient rich foods by vulnerable populations by promoting the production and utilization of nutrient rich foods in the Akwapim South District.
The project will support selected vulnerable groups in the District to establish home/backyard gardens to grow nutrient rich foods including Orange Flesh Sweet Potatoes, Turkey Berries and other locally identified nutrient rich vegetables in the District. This will allow beneficiaries to have direct access to fresh, safe, and highly nutritious foods to improve their diets while surpluses are sold for extra incomes.
BENEFICIARIES OF THE PROGRAMME
The beneficiaries are smallholder farmers who produce mainly to feed themselves and their families and agricultural processors with simple machinery. The table below shows a breakdown of participants for the sensitisation programme and the dates the programmes were carried out.
