This year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day was celebrated in the Akuapim South Municipality on Thursday 2nd June, 2022 spearheaded by the Education Directorate in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service and support from the Municipal Assembly.
The Theme for the celebration was: "We Are Committed to creating a Ghana where every girl and woman have access to period friendly facilities".
About five Hundred disposable sanitory pads were distributed to girls from Basic Six (6) to Basic Nine(9) in five schools in the municipality. The Schools were Nsaba JHS, Obodan MA JHS, Obirikorang Basic Methodist MA, Akuakupom Basic Methodist and Ahyiresu MA.
Both male and female students were educated on the use of the sanitory pads and the need to not stigmatize or discriminate against the girls when they were mentrurating.
The objectives of MHD include to:
break the taboos and end the stigma surrounding menstruation
raise awareness about the challenges regarding access to menstrual products, education about menstruation and period-friendly sanitation facilities
Some Key messages shared with adults and children included:
Menstruation is healthy and normal: End stigmatization now!
Good personal and menstrual health and hygiene go hand-in-hand
Menstrual taboos and traditions lead to exclusion and vulnerability. Cultural barriers surrounding menstruation should be discouraged
Increase investment in school Water, Sanitation and Hygiene infrastructure to cater for privacy and dignity of girls and women
Invest in making sanitary pads or towels more affordable to girls and women
No menstruation, no procreation
Menstruation is not a barrier to education
Empower girls and women through menstrual hygiene education
Invest in making sanitary pads or towel more affordable and accessible
Involvement of boys and men in menstruation issues is not a taboo
