The Akuapim South Municipal Assembly has engaged leaders of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) to address concerns over recent increases in transport fares on some routes within the municipality.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, 18th August 2026, at the Municipal Assembly, brought together the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Paul Osae Offei, selected Heads of Department, Assembly Members and representatives of the GPRTU. The engagement was aimed at clarifying the recent fare increases and finding measures to ensure that approved fares are adhered to.
The meeting followed concerns from commuters over increased fares on the Aburi–Accra, Aburi–Nsawam and Aburi–Madina routes. According to the discussions, some passengers were being charged fares above the approved rates, although the increases had not been formally sanctioned by the Municipal Assembly.
During the engagement, the GPRTU Number One Chairman explained that some of the challenges were associated with drivers arriving from Madina and Nsawam with fares that had already been increased. He noted that this situation made it difficult for local union leaders to effectively enforce approved fares.
He therefore appealed to the Municipal Assembly to facilitate discussions with transport union leaders from Madina to find a lasting solution. He also proposed that the Assembly engage the Ministry of Transport to consider providing two buses to support transportation services and help address the shortage of vehicles on the affected routes.
The Aburi Divisional Police Commander, Mr. Sotoglo, urged transport union leaders to ensure that all drivers operating from their respective stations complied with approved union regulations. He stressed that individual drivers should not determine fares independently and called for appropriate sanctions against those who violated the union's regulations.
He further recommended that the transport operators formally engage the Madina Transport Union on the outcome of their discussions with the MCE and work towards organizing a joint meeting between the two unions. He also proposed the display of fare boards on loading vehicles to enable passengers to know the approved fares and promote transparency.
Responding to questions from the MCE on the approved fares for key routes, the GPRTU Chairman indicated that fares to Accra were being charged at the approved rate. However, passengers travelling to Nsawam and Madina were reportedly paying a price difference between GH¢2 and GH¢3 above the approved fares.
The MCE urged the various transport union leaders to take responsibility for managing their respective stations and ensure that approved fares were respected. He assured them that the Municipal Assembly would collaborate with the unions to publicise officially approved fares, including any adjustments sanctioned by the relevant authorities.
Hon. Paul Osae Offei also directed the transport unions to discontinue the practice of loading passengers at unauthorised roadside locations and encouraged them to operate from designated stations.
The union leaders also raised concerns about the shortage of vehicles serving the Aburi–Madina, Aburi–Nsawam and Aburi–Accra corridors. They further cited the poor road network linking the transport station to the Municipal Assembly as one of the challenges affecting efforts to establish and effectively manage a suitable transport station.
The meeting ended with a commitment to strengthen collaboration between the Municipal Assembly and the transport unions to address the concerns raised. The MCE reaffirmed the Assembly's readiness to support the transport operators, while urging union leaders to take ownership of their stations and comply with decisions reached during the engagement.
The Assembly remains committed to working with transport stakeholders to promote transparent and approved transport fares, improve transport operations and protect the interests of commuters within the Akuapim South Municipality.
